SOME OF THE MATERIAL AT THIS SITE IS SPECIFIC TO CERTAIN OPERATING SYSTEMS. Most of what you'll find at this site is Linux and Mac related.  That means it could be useful if you are running Linux, Unixware, Mac OS X, or whatever, on your machine.  But if your specific OS is not mentioned anywhere in the article, manual, software or e-book, take whatever you read as POSSIBLY BEING WRONG FOR YOU.  For example, if you are in the Linux (or whatever) sections, what you are reading might be useful if you are running Mac OS X, but you needv to be careful.  Did you see the typo in the previous sentence?  We put it there to prove a point.  We and the other people who have written articles for this site are human beings.  That means, by virtue of our species, we are going to make mistakes.  The mistakes may not be as obvious as the V at the end of need.  They might be errors of understanding, which can be trickier.

In general, you need to be very careful when applying any suggestions or ideas gleaned from this or any site.  First, there may be typos or even actual errors in what you read.  Secondly, software changes all the time; what may have been correct a year ago may be very wrong today.

Therefore, take everything you read with a grain of salt and do whatever you can do to confirm that what you are about to do is appropriate (i.e., not dangerous to your computer). If you aren't confident that you should be the one making that kind of decision, please find someone with more knowledge and rely on their judgment in this.

Program code on this site is particularly dangerous for unsophisticated users, and should never be used unless you fully understand it.  Most sample code published here is intended to be illustrative rather than functional.

One big concern in today's modern world is security.  On occasion, writings might contain code snippets created when security wasn't such a big issue.  Even the newer writings may not bear it in mind as much as they should.  Just keep in mind that security is something you need to be aware of, although we will do everything in our power to watch out for this and other problems.
