I was in a wild and crazy mood the other day and thought it would be really cool to install Linux on my 4GB USB Flash Stick.  How comforting, I thought, to always be able to carry Linux around with me in my pocket.  If I went to a friend’s house who had a Windows machine (shudder), I wouldn’t have to suffer.  I could just put in my USB Flash Stick and boot the machine from the USB device to run Linux.  How cool is that?  Beyond words cool.

There may be times when you have to lock a particular piece of software on your Linux system (this is sometimes called pinning).  Plain and simple, there are certain software packages on your system that you won’t want to upgrade.  The most typical reason for this is that the upgrade ends up breaking something.  I once had a network driver that would break my system every time I tried to upgrade to the latest version.  You can be sure I pinned that baby, and good.

Okay, so you have just decided to put Linux on your computer system.  Let me be the first to say that you are a wise, cutting edge sort of individual.  However, before your new Linux OS, and therefore you, can be admired and desired by many, you first have to know how to partition the drive.  I bet if you really use your imagination, you can make that seem sexy.

Prepare yourself…  I am about to reveal the naked truth.  You see, I like exposing things.  All sorts of things.  And here’s one of them.  As a newcomer to the Linux OS, you’re going to find things can be quite tricky and hard going…until you figure out the Linux filesystem, that is.  Admit it, you were expecting me to say something else, weren’t you?  You cheeky monkey, you!

During my time on this planet, I have come across many people who found Linux to be confusing and almost alien-like right from the start, mainly because of its complicated hierarchy of files and folders.  Well, newbie…first of all, welcome aboard the Linux Ship Enterprise, and second, I’m amazing.  Why?  Because I’m going to give you the crib-sheet guide on the Linux Filesystem that you’ve been waiting for most of your adult life.
